Hello all,
I haven't posted for a long time here (this new life I got after 21.04.2007 consumed most of my free time, and at work I was having a lot of work to be done), however in a few moments of relief from hard work and "pillow talks" with my wife I'm now back on line with the new amateurish review of "Versus" a movie which wil leave you with mixed feelings about the Japanese film industry, combinig in itself a solid visual style, lots of nods towards the popular manga and anime universe (although not based on any manga title), great mixture of martial arts, swords-and-gunplay. The plot is probably the weakest part of the movie itself considering two escaping prisoners which made it to a place named "The Forest of Ressurection" where an ancient evil is waiting to be awaken and to become something like a god... In the beginning the movie starts with a little part of an explanation regarding some 666 portals to hell and one of the portals lies within this "Forest of Ressurection". In there a horde of zombies attack our prisoners (one of them turned into a zombie) and a gang of local criminals got involved too, and later on it has come to light that they are actually helping their boss (which is the main bad character) which himself was stopped gaining immortality 500 years ago by one of the prisoners... And from that point on the film gets really messy, with lots of blood, gore, and graphic images of bodies cut in half, eyeballs popping out and corpses risen from the earth, just to get blown off and returned back... The director handles the balance between the blood-o-meter and martial arts and it is a delight to watch a remote version of "The Matrix" in Japanese style and a bit confusing (at times) narrative... I personally enjoyed this movie a lot, a bit refreshing from the classic kung fu movies I was watching recently... I hope that this review will be useful to you and I wish you all the best...
