Hello all,
It's another fine day, another coming review from me... Yesterday I had the pleasure (although the movie itself was cut by almost 20 mins) to see the unofficial sequel to a movie which blow away most of the new films from Jet Li and Jackie Chan with ease - "Ong Bak", representing how old martial movies were made back to the days where the fight used only the physical ability of the particiapnts and their guts to do dangerous stunts and moves. The success of this movie was so big that naturally it's sequel (unofficial, "Ong Bak 2" is on the way) was inevitable (Agent Smith "The Matrix"). The movie is called "Tom Yum Goong" ("The Protector" in US, "Warrior king" in UK) starring the hyper-agile Tony Jaa in a series of mind-blowing fights and stunts ready to amaze us again. The plot again is kept simple, not to distract us from the martial arts choreography, it's about two elephants taken from some poachers in order to sell them at a very high price for their precious tusks. Kam (Tony Jaa) has grown up around these two elephants and when after one of the poachers shoots his father, Kam decides to take revenge in his hands, tracing the elephants all the way to the Down Under in Sidney, where the leads ended in one restaurant called "Tom Yum Goong". After some gracefully presented moves and fights by kam and his rivals the most prominent scene in the whole film is coming - the 4 minutes assault on the restaurant shot in one take, a brilliant and skillfull piece of filmmaking, showing to the future martial artists how to become distinctive from the huge amount of martial arts movies produced every year. It has some weak points though, the plot was more simple than "Ong Bak" and probably due to the cut some characters weren't as developed as in the previous film, but action is compensating all of that, although at some point i felt like watching a big clip of fights... I'll be waiting for this to come on DVD and then I'll fully enjoyed it. My verdict is 7/10... More to come, will keep you informed...
