Very interesting Corry.
In 1939 My Dad travelled from Odessa to join the Polish Free Army at Coetquidan. When the Germans invaded France the Poles decamped and were told to make their way, by any means they could find, to the port at La Rochelle. My dad stole a motorbike (you can see where I get it from) and he and his mates pitched up in La Rochelle with the Germans hot on thier tail.
Dad sailed on the last boat out of La Rochelle. He never liked talking about it but he told me that it was jammed with men. The boat sailed to Liverpool but had to make a wide sweep out into the Atlantic to avoid interception by the Germans. I can't remember how long he said it took them but it was well over a week. They had little food and water as they left La Rochelle in such a hurry. Apparantly they were all in a pretty bad way by the time they made landfall in England.
It was sad to read about how Sosabowski's life turned out. As with so many of those brave men who survived (my Dad included) after the war they could not go back to their homeland and found themselves as unwelcome aliens in England.
The English can be an arrogant lot with short memories and all too eager to claim victory for themselves.
