A jury has decided that Zacarious Moussaoui, the only person to be charged in the US in connection with September 11, is eligible for the death penalty. The verdict concludes the first phase of proceedings against the Frenchman of Moroccan descent.
He was defiant as he was led from court. "You will never get my blood. God curse you all," he shouted.
The jury found Moussaoui had lied to the FBI following his arrest three weeks before the hijacked airliner attacks and that those lies contributed to deaths in the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.
Victims' relatives reacted to the verdict. One of them, Abraham Scott, said, outside the courthouse: "I do believe that the death of Moussaoui will bring comfort to those families as well as individuals across the world and this country that have been impacted adversely with the tragedy on September 11, 2001."
On the day New York's Twin Towers were targeted, Moussaoui was meant to have flown a plane into the White House, according to what he told the court.
