Dear Steve,
I got a simple solution for you that solves all your problems with your computer.
*.First, open your window for some fresh air. Fresh air makes you think better and more logical because of the oxigen coming in.
*.Second, disconnect your pc. Just disconnect every cable that is attached to the back of your computer.
*.Third, pick up your pc and give it a carefull shake. This is to test if nothing is lose inside the pc and that every cable is disconnected.
*.Fourth, THROW THE PC OUT OF THE WINDOW....
*.Fifth, and all your problems dissapeared out of the window. You dont have any problems again with that pc :)

yep just like Dane said install al the drivers for usb , ethernet etc etc. mostly you got the cd when you got the pc. After a format first instal the drivers for your motherboard and of your graphicscard and your usb. but before you install make sure that there is no internetconnection on you pc. when you done that install the rest beginning with a virusscanner.
